Allan Quatermain

Allan Quatermain

H. Rider Haggard

Action/Adventure

Paragraph #2

Allan Quatermain is the main character in the story

He is a short grizzled old man of sixty-sumthin'.  He is the best shot in all of Africa and is an adventurer at heart.

Allan Quatermain does right when he puts his life in harms-way to keep good from being impaled on a spear.

________________________________

Sir Henry Good is another important character in the story

He is a tall, muscular, handsome man.  He is good friends with Allan and like Allan, has a keen sense of adventure.

Umslopogaas is one of my favorite characters in the book

He is a wiry old native, and old friend of Allan's and he carries a long pole ax which he referes to as Ignoisi-glaas.  He often speaks to his ax, but considers it 'unsportsmanlike' to use the blade side of his weapon, and instead uses mainly a spike at the top of the ax to 'peck' his enemies heads.

Paragraph #3

The time is somewhere in the mid 1800's and the place is deep in the heart of South America.

An underground river feeds into a large lake, and on the borders of this lake is a peaceful people (who I forgot their names).  They worship the sun as the ultimate god and the land is mainly ruled by the priest of the sun.  Even though the official rulers are the Twin Queens, Umslythia, and Soria.  Both very beautiful ladies.

Paragraph #4

I wouldn't say there is any moral to the story, or a meaning.  I think it was just meant to be a good read.

This is a story of battle, betrayal, treachery, adventure, friendships, and love.

I don't think I could say I learned anything from this book, except maybe the word piqued, (tho i might still not know what it means)

The Masai were holding the missionaries daughter as hostage until the white men decided to give up either Henry, John, or Allan.  They resolved to do a sneak attack and take the Masai by surprise, and try to free his daughter.

Paragraph #5

  1. Allan and his friends are attacked by the Masai, while staying with their missionary friends.  They repel the attack and set off to find the Lost White Tribe.
  2. They are sucked underground, while canoeing down the river, and let out the other side to find that they are right in the middle of the city where the Lost White Tribe lives.
  3. They kill a herd of Hippo, which are a sacred animal and the ones they shot were a families pets, and tame.  The high priest Agon becomes infuriated and tries to kill them but they escape.
  4. Both Queens falls in love with Henry but he loves one over the other, and Soria, the younger, builds an army to fight against her sister.
  5. Soria is repelled and Allan is gravely wounded and has internal bleeding.  And Umslopogaas is killed when he fights off the priest of Agon to save the Queen.  And Allan dies of internal bleeding.
  6. Henry takes up Allan's diary and finishes the last pages, all of which are attributed to Allan.

Paragraph #6

I thought this book was one of the best books I have ever read.

I don't really know, it is very hard for me to decide.  Maybe the part when Umslopogaas fight all the priest.

I didn't like the part when Allan and his friends killed two hundred Masai with only twenty five guys that could fight, it was a little hard to believe.

It wasn't confusing, but as I said above it was a little hard to believe.

It was predictable in the sense that I knew they were going to find another long-lost civilization, because it happened in the other two books he wrote before.

The ending was sad, because Henry took Allan's diary and filled the last pages about Allan. . . it made me cry a bit.
