Dream Thief

Dream Thief

Stephen Lawhead

SciFi/Adventure/Futuristic

Spencer is the main character, but he goes by the name of Spence.  He lives on the huge space station known as Gotham.  He is on a research project, studying sleep habits.  He falls in love with this girl who is the directors daughter, her name is Ari.

Spence is a very high-strung character, usually does not interact with people, and has a very strong will.  He's ashamed of his status, because he is a poor man, and he only got to his job because he was really smart.

Hocking is another main character in this book.

He is Spence's Arch Nemesis.  He is able to control dreams with a machine, that is able to pry into you dreams and plant the dreams the user wants.  Spence is awake when it happens, but when he wakes up he can't remember anything.  Spence is Hocking's main target.  He is more skeleton than human, and is a grade A on Gotham.

Adjani is the coolest guy in the book.

He is an Indian who work on Gotham, he befriends Spence and repeatedly tries to convince Spence that there is a God.  He is one of the only friends Spence has, and is a key element in getting the dream thief.

The time is somewhere in the future, it never said.

The setting is mainly on the space station Gotham.  But sometimes it will be on earth, or on mars.

One of the lessons in this book, and one that Spence constantly faces is that there really is a God.  Spence's martian friend Kyr, and Adjani repeatedly try to convince Spence there is a God.

Love, betrayal, mystery, friendship, and adventure.

Spence's girlfriend was kidnapped, and he had the choice to go after the dream thief and try to stop him before he had control over all of mankind, or go after Ari.  He chooses to go after the dream thief.

  1. Spence realizes that someone is controlling his dreams, but has no idea who it is.  He decides to go on an exploration to mars, hoping to get away from his mysterious marauder.
  2. On mars he is nearly killed, when Hocking finds out and plants a dream that makes him sleepwalk into a mars storm.  Where the temperature is -87F and the winds are around 100 miles an hour.
  3. Spence manages to make it into an underground cavern, where he discovers a deserted martian city.  And he manages to 'remake' and martian name Kyr.  They become friends and Kyr gives Spence a small disc that he is able to use to signal him when he holds it and thinks about him.
  4. Spence and Adjani go to earth to find Ari's mother and ask her where the dream thief is.  She tells them it is in India.  Ari's mother went crazy after an encounter with the dream thief.
  5. Spence and Adjani go off together, after Ari is kidnapped, after the dream thief.  They find him, but Hocking already killed him and stole the machine.  The real dream thief was a martian named Ortu, and he was Hockings master.
  6. Meanwhile Hockings had taken the machine to Gotham and was about to take over the station when Spence comes and foils his plans.

Best book I ever read.

I really like how Spence told Kyr that people had to choose whether or not they believed in God, and Kyr says "how can anyone not believe there is a god?  There is no logical explanation for all this, except that God made it."

I don't know as if I didn't like any part of it.

Not really, I mean it was futuristic and such, but besides the computer stuff he sometimes uses, it wasn't confusing.

Not by any long shot, I kept expecting it to end soon, but it kept going for quite a while.

Spence announced that he was giving up his project and going back to earth, Ari is disappointed, and then he asked her if she wanted to go with him, and meet his family.
