The Scarlet Pimpernel

Written by Baroness Emmuska Orczy

Action/adventure/suspense/mystery

2

Lady Marguerite Blakeney, wife of Sir Percy Blakeney is the main character in this book.

She is the wife of a very rich and handsome man named Sir Percy Blakeney.  She was nicknamed "the cleverest woman in all of England."  She is very beautiful and many people wondered why she married Sir Percy (because he is rather dull.)

The main character does right when she tries to save her husband because she had accidentally betrayed him.

________

Percy Blakeney is another character is this book who plays an important role, in fact he is the Scarlet Pimpernel.

He married  Lady Marguerite, formally known as Marguerite St. Just.  He is one of the richest men in England and a friend of the Prince of Wales.  He is tall, strong, but rather dull.  He only acts dull to throw the french off his scent.

Chauvelin is the bad guy in this book, and he's a good bad guy.

Chauvelin is part of the french police, sent to England to find the elusive Scarlet Pimpernel.  He is short but thin, and has a wolf-like face with yellow eyes.

Hmm, I'm not really sure about that.

courage, betrayal, love, daring rescues, bad guys v. good guys.

A problem in the book was that Chauvelin found out where Percy and his men were hiding, and so Percy, finding out he knew, almost sacrificed his life to get them a letter to get out of the house.

  1. Chauvelin finds evidence that Lady Marguerite's brother, Armand, is in league with the scarlet pimpernel, and so he threatens her, that unless she helps him find the scarlet pimpernel, that he would have her brother beheaded.  So she agrees.
  2. Marguerite finds leads Chauvelin to the whereabouts of the scarlet pimpernel, but she herself knows nothing about it being her husband.
  3. Marguerite finds a ring in her husbands study with a scarlet pimpernel on it, and she finds out that he really is the scarlet pimpernel.  And so she goes after him to warn him that Chauvelin is after him.
  4. Percy makes Chauvelin take some pepper he thought was snuff.
  5. Percy dresses up like an old Jew and leads them to the house, but slips away and warns the inhabitants to flee.
  6. Chauvelin finds out he has been tricked.  And so he leaves Marguerite and the Jew, and Marguerite finds out that the Jew is actually Percy.

I thought the book was very good.

I really liked Percy, he is my favorite guy.

I don't know if I didn't like any part of the story.

It was a bit confusing as it neared the end, it got slower.

It was a little predictable, because I had seen the movie a while ago.

Marguerite found Percy and they were reunited.

THE END
